Enthusiastic employees are a wonderful asset. Managers absolutely love staff who enjoy what they do, help others and achieve results. However, consistently maintaining an enthusiastic momentum for the long haul can be a significant organizational challenge. Part of this challenge is recognition that preserving, even increasing, that passion is part of a unique learning process for both the company and its employees.

Talented, highly-skilled employees make considerable contributions to a company. However, when the passion begins to ebb, some managers may question employee commitment and devise band-aid solutions to remedy the problem. While these temporary solutions could renew some of the enthusiasm, the results are often short-lived.

By removing the band-aid and digging deeper, individuals and entire organizations can think strategically to uncover the root cause of weakening morale and enthusiasm. This root cause analysis is not a simple solution, but rather a systematic process that takes shape over time. In essence, it is what we call talent optimization. Following and implementing a talent optimization process creates long-term advantages for both the employee and the organization.

In many cases, the process starts with removing barriers and enhancing internal communication between staff, managers and the organization as a whole. Creating a process for clear and effective feedback helps both the employee and the organization learn about each other and their expectations. Proper feedback systems also create benchmarks with which to measure achievement within the communications process.

However, communication is only one part of the development of maintaining and increasing employee enthusiasm. The overall talent optimization process also helps employees cultivate new skills and achieve career goals and can assist with keeping employees engaged and driven to achieve results.

Maintaining employee enthusiasm is a two-way street, requiring participation by the organization’s leadership and the employee. Yet, when both partake in helping each other, the excitement and long-term results can be contagious.
